Monopoly GO New Shield Skins Explained

In a September 2023 update, the whole shields system got a major revision and we can now collect shield skins to customise the look and feel of our board and how we look when we are hit in Shutdown.

While the update is purely cosmetic and doesn't change how shields work. You still collect them when you land on shield tiles on the board, and you still lose a shield when you are attacked in Shutdown. When you have zero shields then you start to receive damage to your buildings and drop your net worth.

The one in-game benefit however is that if you collect enough of them you'll get rewards just as you do for tokens.

New Shield Skins Explained

As the new shield skins start to roll out, you can already start to find them in a couple of places, such as a high tournament placing or a quick wins weekly prize.

There will be a load of shield skins to collect and use in the game. Collect enough of them to complete rows in your Showroom to get extra rewards like free dice.

As you can see from the images above, the new shields look really cool, let's see when they are released and what others are to come.

How to get more Shields

Shields are collected as you land on shield tiles, according to the multiplier you use will be number of shields that you get for landing on a shield tile. If you get more than the maximum number that you are allowed according to your level, the the extra shields will be converted to dice which you get straight back on a 1 to 1 basis.

How to get Shield Skins

There are a couple ways to get your hands on some new shield skins.

Check out your Quick Wins, shield skins may now appear there as the final weekly prize.

Also check out tournament rewards. Shield Skins may also appear there for high placed finishes.

How not to lose Shields

There is a nice trick to not losing shields and that is to not build until you are ready to complete a level in it's entirety, that is why we have our Ultimate Guide to the Cost of Each Level on Monopoly GO guide. Use that resource to try to work out how much it will cost to complete a level fully, and only build when you have enough money to do that.

The advantages are that no one can attack you in shutdown, so you can't lose shields, and you can't lose net worth. Also, every time you land on a shield tile, it's like a free roll, you'll collect the money for landing on that tile, but also get all the dice back that you threw to land on that shield tile.

The only danger is though you could get wiped out of the money in your account by a bank heist! This has happened to me once, but most of the attacks are usually quite small.

When does the new shield system go live?

It doesn't look like it is live yet, but based on it's announcement in the game and on the official Discord channel for the game we think it will be added to the game really soon.
